Here is what he had to say: There is always some risk when a vocalist sings with a sore throat or hoarse voice that it will exacerbate the problem. With that said, I know that professional vocalists sometimes need to perform even when sick. Upon examination of the throat, if I find that it is a case of laryngitis, I may administer a cortisone shot to reduce inflammation, but recommend that the patient rest the voice as soon as possible after the performance. If I find the beginnings of nodules or polyps, or evidence of bleeding in the throat, then I would highly recommend that the patient cancel the performance, rest the voice completely, and do some further testing.
The working musicians and singers in any given area are likely to either know each other or have some working history together. They may have met at the music store, they might have been hired to perform together on a club date (a gig where musicians show up unrehearsed and either read music charts provided by the bandleader or just wing it), or they might have done studio work together. By supporting bands at various places around town and becoming familiar with names and personalities, you can start placing yourself in a positive light among the players.
Many times they have a classified section just for singers and musicians, and that is where you’ll find audition announcements and people looking for other singers and musicians to jam with.
