Observational Evidence Although there are a number of uncertainties about some of the details, the formation of galaxies, for instance, and about the exact time scales, the above description is very well established and represents a remarkable achievement since the beginning of this century due to wedding of theoretical and observational cosmology with high energy and elementary particle physics. I would like now to present the three principal observational facts which taken together give very high credence to a Big Bang cosmology such as that described above.

The Sun and solar system are relatively young, having been formed about 5 billion (5 x 109 ) years ago, but about five billion years after the first generation of stars were formed. The abundance of elements to form the terrestrial planets was provided by the nucleosynthesis which occurred in the first generations of stars. The Earth with the chemical abundances we know could not have been formed earlier in the life of the universe. The Sun will continue for another five billion years (5 x 1O~ in its steady output of energy derived from the conversion of hydrogen into helium.
