Ginsberg’s Death and Fame is published. Kerouac’s Atop an Underwood presents Kerouac’s short prose. George Plimpton edits Beat Writers at Work, a collection of interviews from Paris Review. Snyder’s The Gary Snyder Reader appears.
He had been off junk only four months when he met a forty-three-year-old junky, Joe Ricks, who introduced him to the local drug scene, quickly readdicting him and involving him in a complex new social scene. Burroughs dabbled in real estate: in October he bought a tract of “swamp land” near Highway 61 in the Airline Park neighborhood and told Allen Ginsberg he wanted to build a house there. He feuded with his Italian American neighbors in Algiers; then in January he and Joan received visitors arriving from New York on a cross-country road trip: Neal Cassady; his then-wife, LuAnne Henderson; one of Neal’s Denver friends and his new wife, Al and Helen Hinkle; and Jack Kerouac, who described the visit in his 1957 novel, On the Road, including a visit to the horse races.
Customs seizes copies of Ginsberg’s Howl and Other Poems, which City Lights had contracted to a British printer. Customs authorities deem the material obscene but, when challenged by the ACLU, they later release the books. At City Lights Books, Ferlinghetti and Shig Murao are arrested by San Francisco authorities, who press for convictions on obscenity charges. Nevertheless, Judge Clayton Horn on 3 October clears the accused of charges. The publicity of the trial makes the poetry book sell well.
