Ross, ousted from Stanford for his views on politics and economics; and the 1913 case of John M. Mecklin, who resigned under pressure from Lafayette College due to his teachings on evolution. The latter two cases marked the first time that professorial and scholarly organizations weighed in to publicly condemn such dismissals. ' Ludlum traces the early development of the AAUP and some of the early actions and reports of the Committees on Academic Freedom and Tenure. Examples are provided of cases referred to Committee A in the years between 1916 and 1950.

The AAUP narrowly prescribed the "extra-mural utterances" of professors but at the same time backed away from any obligation it might have to defend professors who engage in unpopular political activity. Slaughter here cites the lack of action on the part of the AAUP in defense of the dismissed City College professors who were called before the New York Rapp-Coudert Committee investigating communist activities in the schools in the early 1940s. Going on to cite the 1956 AAUP position History (General) 29 paper on national security and the 1970 interpretive comments on tenure, Slaughter recounts numerous examples of Cold War-era cases where tenure did not protect the academic freedom of professors engaged in overt political actions.
